Here’s a guide to help you get to know the show and what makes it fabulous!
The Characters: Unlikely Heroes
NEWSIES tells the story of a band of underdogs who become unlikely heroes when they stand up to the most powerful men in New York. Jack Kelly is the leader of the newsboys, but he dreams of life in Santé Fe where he can make a new start. While Jack may be the leader of the newsboys, David is the “walking mouth” and the brains behind the strike. Katherine, a strong willed reporter, shares the newsies’ story to make the young newsboys the kings of New York.
The Setting: New York, New York
Set in the summer of 1899, NEWSIES tells the true story of the newsboys strike, which occurred when the newsboys of New York City refused to sell Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World and William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal to protest the higher prices they were charged for newspapers. Their strike, which lasted nearly two weeks before it was resolved through a historic compromise, was an early example of the child labor reforms to come in the 20th Century. A classic David-and-Goliath story, the newsboys' strike of 1899 changed the way that Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst's newspapers compensated their child labor force and reminded the world that anyone can make a difference.
The Story: Carrying the Banner
NEWSIES chronicles the adventures of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city. After Joseph Pulitzer raises the prices of the papers, Jack encourages the newsboys to take action. Jack finds a cause to fight for, and he rallies the newsboys to go on strike. With help from the reporter Katherine Plumber and rival newsies from New York and Brooklyn, the Newsies seize the day and change the world.
You’ll Especially Love: An Explosion of Song and Dance
Choreographer Christopher Gattelli won a Tony for his work in NEWSIES and after the opening number, you’ll understand why. The newsies tap, twirl and twist as they seize the day and fight for what’s right. The show also features all of your favorite songs from the film, including “Seize the Day”, “Carrying the Banner” and “King of New York”. NEWSIES is a high-energy explosion of song and dance you just don’t want to miss.
