Get to Know the Show: Why West Side Story is Perfect for Valentine's Day

Published by Emilee at 3:10 PM under Fabulous Fox Theatre | Get to Know the Show

More than fifty years ago one musical changed theater forever. Now it's back, and mesmerizing audiences once again. From the first note to the final breath, West Side Story soars as the greatest love story of all time and it’s only perfect that it opens at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Valentine’s Day!

Seeing any show at the Fox is a fabulous experience, but seeing West Side Story at the Fox is a great way to show that special someone how much you care. Here’s a guide to why West Side Story makes the perfect date for you and your Valentine:

The Music

There’s a reason the song “One Hand, One Heart” is played at so many weddings, but it’s not the only romantic tune you’ll hear in West Side Story. The show features timeless Bernstein and Sondheim classics like “Tonight,” “Maria,” and “Somewhere” and there’s nothing like seeing them performed live.

The Story

Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story tells the tale of two “star-cross’d lovers” who fall for each other against the wishes of their families and friends. Despite the odds stacked against them, Tony and Maria fight to stay together. Their devotion to each other inspires a change of heart in those who fought to separate them. What could be more romantic?

Something for Everyone

At its heart, West Side Story is a great romance, but it offers much more than a beautiful love story. If you’re a fan of action movies, you’ll enjoy the exciting rivalries and intense fight scenes between the Sharks and the Jets. If you enjoy comedies, you’ll love the banter between Anita and the other Shark Girls during “America” and the hilarious interaction between the Jets and Officer Krupke. There really is something fabulous for everyone in this show, which makes it a date night that both of you will enjoy!

Your Ticket to West Side Story at the Fabulous Fox

Whether you and your Valentine attend opening night together on February 14, or if you surprise your sweetheart with tickets as a gift, we hope that West Side Story at the Fox helps make your Valentine’s Day a special one!

What's Hot On Broadway: Ghost the Musical

Published by Emilee at 1:31 PM under Behind the Jeweled Curtain | What's Hot on Broadway

After delighting audiences in London’s West End, Ghost The Musical is set to make its Broadway debut this spring with preview performances starting March 15 and opening night on April 23. Based on the hit 1990 film starring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, Ghost the Musical brings the powerful love story of Sam and Molly back to life on the Broadway stage.

A number of Broadway musicals started out as hit films, but we noticed a trend developing. The following hit shows all started out as films with one Tony, Grammy, Emmy and Academy Award-winning star in common:

The Color Purple

Whoopi Goldberg was starring in her own show on Broadway when she was noticed by Steven Spielberg, who then cast her as Celie in "The Color Purple." The musical had a very successful run on Broadway, and a subsequent national tour, which made two stops at the Fox Theatre!

The Lion King

Whoopi added a unique, comical voice to the Hyena, Shenzi, in the animated version of Disney’s "The Lion King." It opened on Broadway in 1997 and has enjoyed a hugely successful run ever since, first at the New Amsterdam Theatre and in its current home, the Minskoff Theatre.   St. Louis audiences can see The Lion King live at the Fox Theatre this August.

Sister Act

Who can forget Whoopi’s starring role as Deloris Van Cartier in the 1992 film, “Sister Act”? The fabulous Petina Miller stars in the role on Broadway where Whoopi is one of the show’s biggest supporters – and producers! The show is not yet on tour, but when it is, we hope to see the singing, dancing nuns on the Fox Stage!

Ghost

Finally, “Ghost,” one of the most iconic and treasured romances, will make its debut on Broadway. Whoopi earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Ghost.

Will you be seeing Ghost the Musical on Broadway? Which films has Whoopi Goldberg starred in that you would love to see made into a musical?
