Mamma Mia! Celebrates Ten Years On Broadway!

Published by Larry at 10:06 AM under Behind the Jeweled Curtain | Special Offers

Two Fabulous Fox employees, Larry and Jana, were able to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Mamma Mia! on Broadway in New York this past October. Read on to find out all about their amazing Mamma Mia! adventures and be sure to check out the special offer for Mamma Mia! at the Fox at the end of this post!

Larry's Confessions of a Mamma-holic

Mamma Mia! first cast its spell on me in London in 1999. I went to see the show quite reluctantly. I was wary of how 22 ABBA songs could make a good musical. Well, 2 ½ hours later I was dancing in the aisles with the rest of the audience. I was hooked. Mamma Mia! always receives a standing ovation – so it’s natural to start dancing once the finale kicks into full gear. But the finale isn’t the only part to love about the hit musical. In case you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing it, the story unfolds in the 48 hours around the wedding of a single mother’s 20 year old daughter. Toss in 3 old flames of mom’s and prepare to be surprised and entertained.

So what does one do when in love with a great show and needs a MM fix? You guessed it, see it multiple times - in Chicago, New York, Las Vegas and, of course, St. Louis. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen MM. Fast forward to October 2011 and the opportunity to celebrate the 10thAnniversary on Broadway comes my way. The evening kicked off with NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg presenting a plaque proclaiming October 18, 2011 Mamma Mia! Day to producer Judy Craymer and star Lisa “Donna” Brescia. The thunderous overture began and the audience and I enjoyed another incredible performance. The cast was amazing and we leapt to our feet for the ovation. And once again, we all danced in aisles for the 3 finale songs. It never gets old.

After the finale, the cast announced they were performing outside on Broadway. That’s right…the street, Broadway. Hundreds of fans were treated to an encore of the finale including a laser light show and fireworks. We were in ABBA heaven. Was it possible for me to overdose after 2 – count ‘em 2 MM finales in one night? No way. In fact there was more. Several of us were lucky enough to attend the after party with the current MM cast including some stars of the original Broadway company - Donna & Sophie, Louise Pitre and Tina Maddigan were there. What an exciting night!

My next fix: The Fabulous Fox Theatre on Tuesday, November 22, 2011

As the song says “Mamma Mia! – here I go again, my, my – how can I resist you?!”

My name is Larry, and I’m a Mamma-holic

Jana says, "Thank You For The Music!"

The Fox was delighted to participate in Mamma Mia’s 10th anniversary celebration on Broadway. The October 18 performance was a night to remember. Following an introduction and Mamma Mia Day declaration by New City mayor Michael Bloomberg, we were treated to an electric performance of the venerable show. Christine Baranski (she played Tanya in the movie) along with several of the original cast members were in the audience for the occasion. We were happy to see that the net proceeds of that performance were donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

After the show, the cast moved outside to a stage on a closed block of Broadway to give an encore performance of the show’s encores – "Mamma Mia," "Dancing Queen" and "Waterloo" – because MM Fans can never get enough! Throw in spandex costumes, laser lights and fireworks and what’s not to like. Ardent fans have moved Mamma Mia into 10th place on the longest-running Broadway show list.

Here at the Fox, Mamma Mia! will have its 7th showing this month. So to that we say “Thank You For the Music!”

Five Fabulous Questions: Leah Hocking

Published by Emilee at 12:40 PM under Behind the Jeweled Curtain | Five Fabulous Questions

St. Louis audiences have the chance to see Leah Hocking, one of the original Broadway cast members of Billy Elliot The Musical, at the Fox Theatre through November 13. Leah plays Mrs. Wilkinson, Billy’s inspiring and spirited dance teacher, in the national tour. You may remember seeing Leah as Ado Annie in Oklahoma!  at the Muny, and Leah is excited to be visiting St. Louis once again and to explore the city. Read on for Leah’s answers to our Five Fabulous Questions and be sure to see her outstanding performance in Billy Elliot The Musical at the Fox.

What was the first show you ever saw on Broadway?

I moved to NYC in the mid 80s and my friend finally made me see a Broadway show, which I longed to do but thought it was too expensive. I didn’t realize there were discount tickets. I saw Bernadette Peters in Song and Dance. It was thrilling.

Many of the touring shows and artists that have visited the Fox have left their mark by painting murals backstage. Even though Billy Elliot The Musical will have a backstage mural, what would your personal backstage mural look like?

Wow, that’s a hard one. Growing up, the theatre was my sanctuary. It always has been. It’s like home. I’d probably paint a mural of…backstage. Or the view of the house from the stage.

If you could see any performance at the Fox, (any artist alive or dead; any show past or present) what would you choose?

Judy Garland

Do you have a hidden talent other than what you do in the show?

I have double-jointed fingers, I can belch on cue, and I’m very good with power tools.

What are you most looking forward to seeing in St. Louis?

I didn’t get downtown when I worked at the Muny. I’m looking forward to seeing the city. But I really enjoyed the neighborhood I stayed in. Lots of galleries and restaurants and music. I was lucky enough to be in town during a street fair. And of course I spent way too much money.

Thanks, Leah! We hope you have a fabulous time in St. Louis!

Get to Know the Show: Billy Elliot The Musical

Published by Emilee at 4:21 PM under Behind the Jeweled Curtain | Get to Know the Show

With incredible music written by Elton John, and a Tony Award-winning producing and creative team, Billy Elliot The Musical is a moving, powerful show that will surprise and inspire you. This beautiful story offers something special for everyone, whether you’re a parent or child, a teacher or student. Billy Elliot The Musical reminds us how important it is, whether you’re pursuing your own dream, or helping someone achieve theirs, to never give up and to never stop believing. You can catch Billy Elliott The Musical at the Fox November 1-13. Here’s a guide to help you get to know the show and what makes it fabulous!

The Characters: All Together Now!

Meet the incredible members of Billy Elliot’s community: Billy’s family, which includes his Dad, his older brother Tony, and his Grandma; Mrs. Wilkinson, the local ballet teacher and her class of hilarious and adorable ballet girls; the town’s miners, including Billy’s Dad and Brother, who fight to survive during a tumultuous strike. Each character plays a unique and important role in Billy’s life, caring for, teaching, encouraging and supporting him and helping him succeed.

The Setting: Coal Mines and Picket Lines

While set in a fictitious town, Billy Elliot The Musical takes place during a historically important time in England’s history. 1984 and 1985 were very difficult years for the workers who toiled in Northern England’s mines as they went on strike, while also trying to support their families. Lee Hall, author of the film and musical, experienced first-hand what it was like growing up in a small English town during these tumultuous events with dreams that, at the time, seemed unattainable. You can read more here about how Lee’s experiences growing up inspired the story of Billy Elliot.

The Story: Working Class meets Dance Class

Billy’s father, a widower, is raising Billy as a single parent. He does what he believes is best for Billy, including sending him to boxing lessons after school, but Billy stumbles into a dance class and discovers that he’s more suited for ballet shoes than boxing gloves. The story of Billy is interwoven with the struggle of his father, his brother, and the many mine workers in Billy’s town. The choreography plays such an important role in telling the story of how they continue to fight for what they believe in, despite the odds stacked against them.

You’ll Especially Love: The Billys

The role of Billy Elliot is both physically and emotionally demanding, and would be for actors twice or even three times the age of the actors who portray Billy. Four talented young actors share the role of Billy Elliot to ensure that each of them have ample time to rest after each performance. Each actor who portrays Billy must undergo an intensive training process including instruction in acting, ballet, tap, acrobatics and singing, in addition to their regular academic studies. You will be truly amazed at the dedication, skill and passion of these young performers.

Your Ticket to Billy Elliot the Musical:

“If Billy Elliot is about one thing, it is that we are all capable of making lives for ourselves which are full of joy and self-expression, whilst we might not all become ballet dancers we are capable of finding moments of real profundity and creativity whatever our circumstances.” –Lee Hall

We hope you enjoy Billy Elliot The Musical at the Fox! Tickets are still available for all performances.
